John H. Terpstra was born on a farm near Lynnville in south central Iowa. He attended Iowa State University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 1981. He received his law degree from the University of Iowa Law School in 1991.

John is engaged in the general practice of law including but not limited to agricultural, real estate, family, estate planning, wills and probate, trusts and estates, taxation, and business law.

John was admitted to the State Bar of Iowa in 1992, the United States District Court Southern District of Iowa in 1992, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in 1992, the United States Tax Court in 1992, and the United States Supreme Court in 1997.

John serves on the Iowa Bar Association Citizenship Committee and is a past president of the Jasper County Bar Association.
